MARGAO: The District Level Coordination Committee for Tobacco Control at its meeting decided to intensify the raids against tobacco product vendors and also create awareness about the new pictures to be posted on cigarette packets warning against cancer.
Additional Collector Agnelo Fernandes said the imports of cigarettes from China and Turkey, which are packed in improperly designed packets, have increased and many such products have been seized in Goa.

“We are going to make sure that all such products are taken out of the market in our efforts to make South Goa tobacco free,” he said, while adding that a district level task force has been constituted for this purpose.
Roland Martins of GOACAN who also participated in the meeting pointed out that new graphic pictures of the danger of cancer have been advised to be printed on cigarette packets for the year 2021 and another picture for 2022.
“We shall create a massive awareness of this and make sure that all cigarette manufactures abide by the rules,” he said while adding that panchayats that have been proactive in campaign against tobacco use are advised to adopt a resolution declaring their village to be tobacco free at the Special gram sabha to be held on January 26.
