MARGAO: Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced that the Konkan Railway parallel line project would start in Goa, shortly.
The minister said that the delay in commencing the project was due to lack finances.
Elaborating on the financial aspect, Prabhu said the project would also involve the construction of bridges requiring additional expenditure; therefore, the railway ministry was working with the Surface Transport Ministry to reduce overall expenditure costs.
Earlier, Union Defence Minister and former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar had urged the railway ministry to go ahead with the project, immediately. He advised that the project could be taken up in phases. On the point of finances, Parrikar had said that the railway ministry should go ahead with the development without placing too much emphasis on profit or losses.
The proposed parallel line project has faced opposition in Goa, especially, from residential areas along the existing track.
