25 persons evacuated; water from overflowing dams to be released

PANJIM: Nearly 25 persons, including women from Bardez and Bicholim talukas, were on Tuesday shifted from their water-logged homes to relief camps as incessant rains continued to lash Goa. The disaster management team of the North District evacuated the stranded persons to safer places like government schools until the situation normalises. 
“Five persons from Bardez and 20 individuals from Bicholim were evacuated from their respective houses and shifted to relief camps. Their houses were inundated. Our field officers have also been deployed across all places to take a stock of the situation round the clock,” North Collector R Menaka told Herald. 
She further said that they have identified relief camps at each taluka and the team comprising officials from various departments like police, fire & emergency, water resources, have been on alert to tackle the situation arising out of heavy rains.
Several houses and low-lying areas have been inundated owing to continuous rainfall since the past few days with the Indian Meteorological Department issuing an Orange Alert till August 9. Several roads were flooded, farms damaged and landslides also reported on Tuesday.
Fire personnel were on their toes as the control room received several calls of trees uprooting, falling branches and road blockages. 
As the water level rises in the dams, the IAS officer revealed that families living around dams will be informed about the opening of the gates for release of water. If required, she added, the families will be evacuated and shifted to safe places. 
On Tuesday evening, the Bicholim Mamlatdar released a public notice that the Tillari Irrigatrion Office will release water from all gates of the Tillari dam and therefore, inhabitants of villages of Sal, Punarvasan, Mencurem as well as other villages on the banks of River Chapora River are requested to not venture in the river and take necessary precautions.
