MARGAO: Buckets welcomed visitors to the South Goa Administrator of Comunidades office as water seepage was rampant since the last two days. This isn’t the first time that the office is experiencing water seepage, with employees claiming it is an annual phenomenon.

Herald inquiries have revealed that the Comunidade Administrator had floated a tender to carry out major repairs to the building. But the same could not take place as the Administrator received a lone bid, and the Committee resolved to cancel the tender.

Comunidade Administrator Sangeeta Naik told Herald that her office now plans to float the tender after the monsoon around September-October.

“Since we received a lone bid, we decided to cancel the tender. But we have decided to take up minor repair works give the past experience of water seepage inside the building,” she added.

Assistant Registrar of Co-op Societies faces the brunt

MARGAO: This may seem strange, but true. Rain water has been literally gushing inside the rented premises of the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Margao, since Friday, while the government is still sleeping over the proposal to shift the office to the new district Collectorate.

The unusual situation has left the computers damaged, while employees had to wade through the water accumulated inside the premises. A visit to the office revealed that nearly half a dozen buckets have made their presence felt all over the office, including tables.

Functioning from a rented premises in the heart of the commercial capital since a decade now the office had made several representations to the Registrar as well as other authorities to shift it to the new Collectorate, but in vain.

When Herald contacted the Assistant Registrar, P M Naik, he said the proposal to shift the office to the new Collectorate has been okayed by the government and the shifting may take place once the file gets the official nod. “I have written to the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and have drawn the attention of the District Collector to the prevailing situation in the office,” he said.

Flooding at Comba subway

MARGAO: Margao authorities were caught napping as flood water inundated the Comba subway on Tuesday due to overnight incessant rains, even as the promised water pump was nowhere in place to drain out the water.

The flooding of the subway threw traffic heading to the educational institutions out of gear, resulting in traffic snarls in the city. In fact all traffic heading to educational institutions at Comba-Margao was hit as motorists avoided the subway due to the presence of water, creating traffic bottlenecks at the railway crossing.

Though the authorities, including Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva, had promised to get the water pump in place well before the onset of monsoons, today’s incident is a clear indication of the delay by the authorities concerned to comply with the instructions issued at the meeting convened by the Chairperson to review monsoon preparedness in the city.

Satyendra Naik, husband of MMC ward Councilor Bindya, who was monitoring the situation at the subway, said the PWD officials failed to start the water pumping despite prior notice by the civic body. “We had been in contact with the PWD officials as well as the contractor, but pumping could not start despite our notice,” he said.

Naik admitted that water pumping from the subway should start everyday at 6 am to give relief to the hundreds of vehicles heading to the educational institutions and to avoid traffic congestions especially during peak morning and afternoon hours.

This road needs attention

MARGAO: It’s only a couple of days now since monsoons have hit the state, but the Aquem Power House-Gogol road is in a dilapidated state.

A huge crater right on the middle of the road, besides potholes all over the stretch, is giving nightmares to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Motorists contend that the authorities should immediately take up repair works on the road before it becomes bad.
