Rains likely in Goa due to Cyclone Yass: IMD

PANJIM: The State might witness special distribution of rains till May 26 due to the effects of the Cyclonic storm Yaas which has formed over the Bay of Bengal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Monday said the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ and is likely to cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts on May 26 after turning into a very severe cyclonic storm.

“There will be no direct impact over Goa. But as a minimal impact, there are cloud formation in patches along the west coast…including Goa brining showers in some parts,” IMD Goa in-charge Rahul informed.

There will be increase in the distribution of rainfall over Goa till Wednesday, Rahul said. “While that the system is over Bay of Bengal, the winds along the west coast of India become north Westerlies. Since the winds with westerly components will bring moisture from Arabian Sea, for Goa it is likely to result in more moisture in the atmosphere and an increase in distribution of light to moderate rain,” he explained.

“It is a normal phenomenon in the last week of May for Goa to receive thundershowers with lightning,” Rahul said.

Meanwhile, it is said that the south west monsoon reached Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. The monsoon onset over Kerala is expected on May 31- a day in advance. As such, Goa may also witness monsoon showers in the first week of June.
