Rane Sr bats for new Zuari bridge

PANJIM: After Pratapsing Rane’s batting for Mopa airport the previous day drew ire in South Goa, the Opposition Leader Thursday insisted on a new Zuari bridge for South Goa, while also urging that the existing bridge be repaired urgently to prevent any untoward incident.

Speaking in the House during demands for grants, Rane also recommended that the existing bridge should not be overloaded with movement of heavy vehicles.
“I only pray for all coming from South Goa…God keep them safe,” he said as he requested government to ensure immediate steps are undertaken to strengthen the bridge while insisting on the need for a second bridge over Zuari river.
The Opposition Leader went on to add that government should not repeat the old bridge design as such structures have collapsed. He cited the collapse of Mandovi bridge 15 years after it was constructed. “Let us not repeat such designs. These have collapsed in Australia and other places…” he said, adding, “The government should ensure that there is less load on the bridge (Zuari) and heavy vehicles are not allowed on it.”
During a press conference over a month ago, Rane had said that he was scared to travel on the Zuari bridge.
Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho also echoed similar view saying that the Zuari bridge is the only connectivity between the two districts. “if it collapses, what will happen to the economy of Goa?” he questioned.
