CANACONA: Cystoagaricus trisulphuratus, also known as agrius trisulphuratus fungi, a rare species growing on soil was spotted at a deserted location at Chaudi in Canacona on Thursday.
This bright scaly-orange coloured species belonging to fungi world, which is believed to be a rare species, generally grows on soft soil rich in leaf mulch, the cap grows up to 3 to 10 cms, while the cylindrical stripe is between 3 to 6.5 cms thick.
Enquiries with botanists revealed that no much study is being done on this rare species, but there are instances of this fungi being spotted in Pune and West Bengal apart from Goa. Experts say it has also been sighted in Malaysia and Indonesia, apart from some other tropical countries.
There are also reports of rural people consuming this scaly mushrooms but botanists feel that they should be screened for toxins like cyclopeptides before it could be certified as safe for human consumption.
When this correspondent spoke to Suvarna Fonseca e Antao, a lecturer in Carmel College, she said that there are so many species of fungi found in Goa and most of them are not studied nor listed and cystoagaricus trisulphuratus was one of them.
