QUEPEM: PWD Minister Nilesh Cabral on Saturday inspected the landslide area at Taki-Xeldem in Curchorem and observed that while mud and silt had entered one house here, five other houses were on the verge of collapse too.

“At least five houses in Taki-Xeldem were in danger of collapsing as they were constructed on a shaky ground,” said Cabral and added that the dwelling units were at the base of a hill and perched on danger.
“I will instruct the Deputy Collector to shift the inmates of these homes to a safer place if needed,” the minister said.
“People construct houses anywhere without giving it a second thought and when things go out of hand they will conveniently blame the government,” Cabral said.
The Minister said that he had completed all the formalities for the construction of a retaining wall here a few years ago, as he feared the worst but no contractor came forward to take it up for reasons best known to them.
“People living here are economically backward and their safety is our main concern. We will write a letter to the District Collector and demand for a site inspection of the entire area and act accordingly,” Cabral said.
