PANJIM: Assistant Professor Shilpa Singh, facing police investigation into allegations of hurting religious sentiments through her social media account, has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and National Women’s Commission (NWC) seeking protection against death threats she received on a national news channel.

She had recently faced intimidation and threat from Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Goa unit and Rashtriya Yuva Hindu Vahini, Goa unit regarding her teaching and Facebook post. Singh, last week received rape and death threats on a national Hindi news channel where the report of her First Information Report (FIR) was also telecast.
She has registered a formal complaint with the national commissions in New Delhi. She has submitted complete details of names of people and threats received and pointed to the possibility of some of them being in Goa and influenced by Rashtriya Yuva Hindi Vahini.
In her complaint, she has reiterate request for protection from such elements. The assistant professor had also written to Goa Police seeking security but in vain.
Meanwhile, the Goa State Women’s Commission has given her appointment on Thursday where she is expected to give full details of the case. Singh is facing FIR under Section 295 (Hurting Religious Sentiments) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after a complaint was filed by Rajiv Jha, a resident of Usgao-Ponda alleging that through her personal Facebook account she has been posting controversial comments to hurt religious sentiments.
