PANJIM: Aggrieved
over the sudden crackdown on rental cars at Calangute, North Goa Rent-a-Car
Association reminded the State government of its pending demand on legalizing
the business.
A day
after nearly two dozen rent-a-cabs were penalised for operating along the
coastal belt sans permission, the association members called on Transport
Director Sunil Masurkar on Wednesday urging him to end the drive.
“The
department had sent four teams to intercept the rent-a-cars plying on Tuesday.
The tourists, who had hired these vehicles, were subjected to inconvenience. We
therefore decided to meet the director to resolve the matter,” legal advisor to
the association Rohan Kalangutkar told Herald after the meeting.
The
members again reminded the government to fulfill its assurance on issuing
permits to rental cars in the district in the name of the association. “The
government had assured to resolve our problem by Ganesh Chaturthi last year
which was postponed to Diwali, but there is no end to all this. We need to
ensure the business is recognized by the government to operate without any
fear,” he stated.
The
Transport director, Kalangutkar said, has assured to discuss the issue at the
next meeting of the department. The association has 415 members who own around
500 rental cars in individual names except for one travel agency that runs over
200 cars.
