Tributes paid to martyrs, freedom fighters

Governor Dr S S Sidhu and Chief Minister Digambar Kamat led Goans in paying tributes to the memory of martyrs and freedom fighters who immensely contributed for the cause of freedom of Goa.
The state-level function to commemorate Revolution Day was held at Azad Maidan, here where 36 freedom fighters were felicitated. Functions were held in Margao and Ponda as well.
Dr S S Sidhu expressed satisfaction that the State has made splendid progress in all walks of life during the last over four-and-a-half decade since Liberation. However, he said State must continue efforts for the accelerated and inclusive socio-economic development to improve the standard of living of people in Goa to make Goa a model State in the country.
He called upon people to renew their commitment to protect and enrich hard-earned freedom, and utilise it for greater all-round progress.
The State’s vast potential, should be put to optimum and efficient use and ensure that the State continues to shine as an island of peace, harmony and economic prosperity.
He said India is marching steadily towards achieving greater progress and prosperity. ‘We should contribute our mite to this gigantic task. Let us, on this occasion, rededicate ourselves to serve the State, and the country, with greater sense of determination, commitment, patriotism and responsibility, keeping in view the cherished objectives of accelerating the pace of all-round, self-sustaining and long-lasting progress’, Governor added.
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that his government will not impose anything on people of Goa which they do not want.
He said the Government cancelled SEZ, placed Regional Plan before them for suggestions to meet people’s aspirations.
Transport Minister Sudin Dhawalikar, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, CCP Mayor Carolina Po, Acting Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava, Information and Publicity Secretary Narendra Kumar and prominent freedom fighters were present on the occasion.
Thirty-six freedom fighters were honoured in person and posthumously at the hands of governor and chief minister with a shawl, srifal and a replica of the martyr’s memorial at Azad Maid
