CANACONA: A Nagarcem resident was seriously injured in an incident of “road rage” reported near Char Rasta over a frivolous matter on Wednesday.
The accused, who was absconding following the incident, was arrested on Thursday at Dona Paula and booked under Section 307 of IPC. The incident, which got recorded on a CCTV installed at a nearby building, has gone viral since then.
Recalling the incident, a source present at Agonda-Palolem junction said 46-year-old Premanand Naik Gaonkar, a Canacona municipality employee and a resident of Nagarcem was proceeding to Palolem on his two-wheeler at around 7 pm on Wednesday. Before reaching Palolem-Agonda junction, a car overtook him, missed him by a whisker.
After overtaking, the car stopped a little ahead due to the traffic jam, at this moment, the rider advised the car driver against driving rashly. Following which both the driver and the rider allegedly had a tiff.
In a fit of rage, the driver Anand Pagi allegedly hit the rider from behind causing grievous injuries, the source added.
The rider was taken to Canacona Health Centre in an ambulance and following initial treatment, he was shifted to Hospicio, Margao. Due to lack of trauma centre, other facilities and the head injuries sustained in the incident, the victim was later shifted to GMC. Sources said the CT scan showed no internal injuries but the rider received 68 stitches. Annoyed over the incident, locals gathered at Char Rasta under the banner of Jagruth Canaconkars, blocked traffic on NH66 on Thursday at Char Rasta till Canacona Deputy Collector assured them that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours.
A police team led by South Goa SP Arvind Gawas and comprising of DySP Kiran Poudval, Canacona PI Sudesh Narvekar, Colva PI Rahul Parab and Margao PI Tushar Lotlikar arrested the accused at Dona Paula.
Police said the accused would be produced in the local court for remand. PI Sudesh Narvekar is investigating.
