Margao Municipal Council (MMC) n Tuesday promised to form a committee for Road Safety soon. The announcement came at the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims that was observed by GOACAN to bring awareness to the theme of medical care to victims, proper investigation and justice to the victims of road accidents.
“Our proposal for having road safety and traffic management committees has been well accepted by all Panchayats and Municipalities and their administrations. We are confident that this will bring local flavour to the movement of road safety and we expect the Councilors take up the issue of road safety in their wards,” Roland Martins of GOACAN said.
MMC Chairperson Babita Angle said, “The move for having road engineering committee is a great thing as it will be like an ombudsman on the entire creation of roads and vehicle infrastructure. I congratulate the government for the notification of the committee.”
MMC Chief Officer Y Tawade said, “The (road engineering) committee has been chalked out and the Council has also resolved the same. The data is very disturbing and having said that we will definitely go ahead with this committee and will publicise the same in one or two days.”
Commissioner for Disabilities Anuradha Joshi was also present at the function.
Tributes were paid to accident victims by lighting lamps in their memory. Articles and newspaper cuttings of accidental deaths of people were exhibited as an activity to make people aware on the importance of road safety.
“The National Road Safety week will be held in January and we are expecting to kick start the campaign then. With these steps in place we will be able to take the movement forward but what we are worried about is the increasing number of deaths. We have approached the Excise Department and the Tourism Department to create awareness on ‘dont drink and drive’ and use of genuine ISI mark helmets for rent a bike users,” Martins said.
He also said that they are confident political party will not be able to ignore the issue and that GOACAN will make politicians spell out what they will do for traffic safety in their constituencies once elected.
