CUNCOLIM: Panzorconi residents have warned the government not to go ahead with the road-widening of National Highway 17, from Panzorconi to Balli in present alignment.
A public meeting was held on Monday to oppose NH 17 widening work, where the local MLA Clafacio Dais, Councilor Udesh Gaonkar, Panzorconi Champlain and other leaders and villagers were present.
It was resolved to oppose the road widening tooth and nail at the present alignment of NH 17 from Dandevado to Balli. It was also proposed to allow the bypass road parallel to Konkan Railway line.
A memorandum too was presented to Dais, regarding their objection on the proposed road-widening work.
The Councilor said there were more than hundred houses and shops on the road-widening alignment and that it would be a big disaster from Cuncolim to Balli, if the government went ahead with present NH17 road widening. Dandevado Market, Cuncolim Market, Balli Market and Hundred odd houses will be demolished if the present road is widen. There is little Scope and little space to widen the present NH17 stretch from Dramapur to Balli Patem.
During Congress government former MLA Joaquim Alemao had proposed bypass road parallel to Konkan Railway line from Dandevado to Balli Patem. This bypass can best be an alternative for the present road. Less loss will be caused if the government went ahead with bypass alignment, Gaonkar said.
In spite of our opposition if the government went ahead with the present road-widening work, we will not hesitate to protest, he warned.
