Robbery bid at Cuncolim’s Muthoot Finance branch foiled

MARGAO: Cuncolim police have registered an offence of attempt to commit robbery against a resident of Masconi-Cuncolim, Raymond Baretto, after he allegedly barged into the Cuncolim branch of Muthoot Finance Ltd on Wednesday noon and assaulted the lady branch manager and the security guard.

Raymond, who tried to make good his escape after a staffer put on the security siren, fractured his leg and hand after he fell down on the ground from the staircase after being confronted by a branch executive. Both the branch manager, Divya Naik and the accused are admitted in Hospicio hospital.
The incident occurred shortly after lunch break when the accused, who was wearing a helmet and armed with a danda and a kitchen knife, barged into the branch. The security guard Dattaraj Shetye said he lifted his chair in defence when he saw the accused menacingly approaching the staff and manager and allegedly demanding money. “I sustained injuries on my hand after the accused assaulted me with the danda. The accused later hit the danda on the manager’s head, causing bleeding injuries”, Dattaraj said. At the time of the incident, the branch manager, the security guard and a lady junior executive were inside the branch, while another junior executive Tanman Prabhudessai had gone out for lunch.
The accused is believed to have later tried to flee after a lady junior executive put on the security alarm. The accused was, however, confronted on the staircase by Tanman when the latter was returning to the branch after lunch. In the scuffle, the accused fell on the ground from the staircase and fractured his leg and hand.
Police sources investigating the case said the accused is engaged in business and owns a water tanker. When contacted, DySP Mohan said the police will try to find whether the accused had any relationship with Muthoot Finance as he was involved in business. “We have not yet interrogated the accused”, DySP Mohan said, when asked whether the police have ascertained the exact motive behind the incident.
The police have recovered the danda and the knife. They have registered offence of attempt to commit robbery, assault, criminal trespass and wrongful confinement.
