PANJIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday urged Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman to rollback the hike in export duty on all grades of iron ore. Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho was also present during the meeting at New Delhi.
Sawant told the Union Minister that Goa’s iron ore largely being low grade i.e. below 58% Fe and not processed for steel making in the country. He requested the Ministry of Finance to consider ‘nil’ export duty instead of 50 per cent on the low grade iron ore exports as was done in the year 2016. This is necessary for sustainable mining in the State, the Chief Minister stated.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister is learnt to have discussed various issues Goa is facing related to Goods and Service Tax (GST). Godinho, who is also one of the GST Council members, discussed various matters including request to extend the GST compensation.
Godinho had recently said that the every State including Goa is requesting the Centre to extend the GST compensation time limit to help the States. The five-year GST compensation period ends in June this year.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister returned to Goa on Monday night.
