Rough sea, winds batter Canacona coast

CANACONA: Rough seas battered coastal areas of Canacona Taluka since last couple of days even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that high swells are likely to lash the Goa coast till Saturday night.

The rough sea combined with heavy winds and rains caused scores of trees to fall causing misery to many people in the taluka.

Nearshore was rough from Tuesday which has left the sea shore on the coast washed away to a considerable extent.

Many coconut trees got uprooted as the sand got washed away in the huge waves that pounded the coast line since Tuesday.

The Polem, Galgibaga, Talpona, Rajbagh and Patnem beaches saw lot of sand erosion while Palolem and Agonda bore maximum brunt of the nature’s fury as many coconut trees that dotted the coastline fell to the ground either due to sand erosion or due to strong winds blowing at the speed of 45 to 50 kms per hour.

As the IMD had issued prior warning for the fishermen not to venture into the sea, over thousand fishermen from the taluka pulled their boats to safety, sources informed.

Meanwhile, Canacona rain gauge observatory has recorded a seasonal rainfall of 2915.2mm on Friday till 8 am.

IMD has predicted that there is likelihood that Goa will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at the isolated places on Saturday and the wind will be blowing at a speed 35-45 km/hr over Goa.
