PORVORIM: Mapusa Police Traffic Department has booked 31,895 cases of traffic violations in 2015 and collected a fine of Rs 38,72,200. During the same period in 2014, the Mapusa police booked 33,212 cases of traffic violations and collected Rs 35,88,150 as fine.
In 2015, the traffic department booked 9752 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets and collected Rs 9,75,800 as fine; in the previous year 8694 were fined for not wearing helmets. The cases booked under other major offences and fine collected in 2015 are as follow; 297 cases of rash and negligent driving (Rs1,78,200), 2202 dangerous parking (Rs 2,20,400), 2387 no entry (2,43,300), 2195 tinted glasses (Rs 2,18,600), 2915 driving without seat belt (Rs 2,91,400), 788 driving without licence (Rs 3,77,300), 305 using mobiles while driving (Rs 1,79,400) and 1236 no parking (Rs 1,23,600)
“Despite imposing fines, traffic violations are on the rise. The rise in the number cases booked for riding vehicles without wearing helmets in 2015 indicates that two-wheeler riders prefer to pay fines rather than wearing helmets,” says police officials at the Mapusa Traffic Department.
Almost 25 per cent of the fines have been collected from two-wheeler riders who were found driving without helmets, police said adding, Rs 100 as fine for not wearing helmets is very small amount and there is a need to increase the amount for the fine to act a deterrent.
