CANACONA: After Herald reported that the roof sheets of the hi-tech Canacona KTC bus stand had blown away, allowing rainwater to enter the building, the government has tendered the work for the repairs at a cost of Rs 89 lakh. The work has already begun at a rapid pace.
General Manager of the cash-starved Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) Kunkolikar stated that the KTC undertakes only minor repair works and that they weren’t repairing the Canacona bus stand complex, which was constructed by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation about a decade ago.
Another KTC source disclosed that the work is entrusted to the Public Works Department (Div 8, Buildings) and part of the contract was allotted to one ‘Jyoti Constructions’. They also stated that commuters blamed them for the shabby condition of all bus stands in the State, ignorant of the fact that KTC only offered transport services and hardly had a role to play in the upkeep of the bus stands. Presently, the KTC has only one engineer and a clerk to handle the maintenance works across Goa.
KTC is an autonomous body, but the transport ministry, GSIDC and PWD are at the helm of affairs in maintaining its infrastructure. Their role is limited to informing the higher-ups about repairs and lack of facilities for the commuters.
Several attempts were made to contact the PWD chief engineer to ascertain what type of repair work they wanted to undertake, but to no avail.
