BICHOLIM: Some shopkeepers from Bicholim market confronted the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) chief officer over waste being thrown in the open by a slaughter house in the market.
It may be recalled that a slaughter house and a public toilet have allegedly dumped waste in the open gutter, inconveniencing the other shopkeepers. Several pleas to the authorities concerned did not yield any result, and the waste is being thrown since the last several months. BMC has already proposed a road on the land and those running the public toilet and the slaughter house have been issued notices to shift the structures.
“It’s surprising that despite issuing the notice, the owner is yet to shift to the new market and all the waste is being let out in the open gutter,” complained a shopkeeper, Nitin Kumbharjuvekar.
“If the owner is refusing to comply with the notice, the BMC can either stop the electricity supply or can even demolish the structure for the proposed road,” he added.
After a person from the area was infected with malaria, the people became furious and confronted BMC Chief Officer Vishnudas Arlekar. The chief officer later sent ME Asif Khan and Market Inspector Rekha Matonkar for a site inspection.
During the inspection, Khan proposed that BMC could dig a pit by the side of the gutter so that all the waste and water could be dumped in it, but the shopkeepers objected to it claiming that it would only lead to waste of money as the construction is on the proposed road.
