VASCO: Sada sub-jail inmate Irshad Singur (22) allegedly consumed phenol on Friday evening. He was immediately taken to the Cottage hospital and then to GMC Bambolim where he is kept under observation.
Singur is an accused in several thefts and rioting.
According to jail sources, the incident occurred at around 5 pm on Friday when Singur approached jail authorities and informed them that under frustration he consumed phenol that was given to inmates for cleaning toilets.
The jail authorities swung into action and with the help of 108 Ambulance shifted Singur to Cottage hospital at Chicalim where doctors after giving him medical aid referred him to GMC Bambolim where his condition is reportedly stable and the doctors have kept him under observation.
Jail sources also informed that, since last few days, Singur appeared depressed and for this very reason on Friday morning jail authorities had sent him to the Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour (IPHB) in Bambolim for mental health check-up.
“After examining the patient (Irshad Singur), doctors at IPHB opined that the patient should be lodged at IPHB as he is having mental sickness symptom and suicidal tendency. To get him lodged at IPHB, a court order was required; however before the jail authorities could obtain court order to shift him to IPHB, Singur approached the jail authorities with the claim that he consumed phenol.”
Mormugao police informed that they have not registered any case yet as the patient is suffering from mental sickness and is not fit to give any statement. Police are waiting for doctor’s report to decided further course of action.
In the past, Singur has made two successful attempts to escape from custody but was caught by police and was lodged at Sada sub-jail.
