MARGAO: The deteriorating condition of the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex (South Goa Collectorate), a sprawling government establishment worth crores of rupees, continues to inconvenience citizens in the South District. Numerous citizens have voiced their displeasure, calling on the government to address the dire state of the building’s maintenance. An on-site inspection reveals widespread issues, including poorly-maintained toilets, crumbling ceilings, and concerns of potential collapses.
Srinet Kothwale, Additional Collector-I, disclosed that the Public Works Department (PWD) has already floated tenders and initiated the process of repairing the building’s toilets. Additionally, estimates are being prepared for both minor and major maintenance tasks.

During the monsoon, certain government offices on the ground floor faced water leakage, which was subsequently rectified. A staff member recounted the challenges they faced during heavy rain in July. “We used to literally rush out from the office as the floor was flooded during the heavy rains. Few days ago, repair works were carried out by the authorities, resulting in some relief,” said a staffer.
Visitors like Peter Fernandes from Benaulim expressed apprehension over the safety of hundreds of individuals frequenting the Collectorate daily. He criticised the government’s lack of serious action despite prolonged discussions about the building’s maintenance.
A substantial portion of the building’s ceiling on the ground floor is in precarious condition, with hanging ceiling fragments posing a risk to citizens. As various government offices operate within the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex, foot traffic has increased, intensifying concerns.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat raised the issue of the building’s maintenance during the recent Legislative Assembly session. The government has assured him that comprehensive repair works will be undertaken. Kamat pledged to personally follow up on the matter with the concerned minister to ensure swift repairs. Additional Collector Srinet Kothwale clarified that the PWD will henceforth oversee all maintenance for the collectorate building.
“Estimates will be prepared wherein all the major and minor repair works will be executed,”said Kothwale.
