BICHOLIM: Raya Parsekar was elected as the chairperson of Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) by 7-6 votes, on Thursday.
Councillors Raya Parsekar and Rajesh Sawal had submitted their papers on behalf of Dharmesh Saglani group while Yeshwant Madkar, Rashmi Desai and Dayanand Boryekar had filed their nominations on behalf of BJP.
Before the election, Rajesh from Saglani group and Rashmi and Dayanand Boryekar from the BJP group withdrew their nominations thus leaving Saglani panel’s Raya and the BJP’s Yeshwant in the fray.
Finally, Raya won the election by 7-6 votes. He was supported by Dharmesh Saglani, Deputy Chairperson Ansira Khan, Rajesh Sawal, Jyoti Blaggon, Kunda Madkar and Rajendra Ameshkar, while Yeshwant was supported by councillors Brahma Desai, Shubhada Sawaikar, Anand Kanekar, Dayanand Boryekar and Rashmi Desai.
Meanwhile, no confidence motion filed by Sawal-backed panel against the Deputy Chairperson Ansira from Saglani panel failed as Sawal-backed panel lost the election by 6-7 votes. Nipanikar was the Presiding Officer. He was assisted by Chief Officer Deepak Vaingankar in the election process.
