MARGAO: Beef has run out of stock in Salcete countryside since the last four days with the supply facilitated by the Goa Meat Complex from across the border disrupted once again.
Angry meat traders and cold storage owners from Salcete said they have not received even a kilogram of beef since Thursday last for reasons best known to the Goa Meat Complex and the government authorities. And the cold storage owners are keeping their fingers crossed as Goa Meat Complex Chairman Lyndon Monteiro is holed up in Delhi in connection with the Supreme Court order on RDA Minister Mickky Pacheco in the Junior Engineer assault case.
“We have run out of stock since the last three days. The cold storage owners had last received beef consignment on Wednesday which got exhausted the following day. Since then beef has been out of stock”, informed a prominent cold storage owner from Margao.
“We cold storage owners are indeed helpless. We cannot go across the border into Belgaum and procure our beef requirements because of NGOs and right wing elements blocking the supply. We are totally at the mercy of the Goa Meat Complex”, he added.
When Herald contacted GMC Chairman Lyndon Monteiro to throw light on the disruption of beef supply to the state from Thursday last, he said that things will fall in place in the next two days. “We will arrange for a consignment of beef to the state on Wednesday followed by another consignment on Saturday on the eve of Easter Sunday”, Lyndon said, adding that the GMC is evolving a mechanism to ensure regular supply of beef to the state.
