MARGAO: Salcete politicos are back again, bracing up to sponsor harvesters with the paddy reading for harvesting across the taluka countryside.
Leading the pack was Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado, who inaugurated a harvester in Davorlim village of his Navelim constituency after blessing by a Priest. Avertano said he had been sponsoring harvesters to farmers in his constituency since he was elected as MLA of Navelim constituency two and half years ago. “Though the government provides subsidy of Rs 1000, I foot the balance amount of Rs 1200”, he told the media.
The Fisheries Minister has booked as many as four harvesters, which will be made available to farmers of his constituency – right from Davorlim to Mandopa and Telaulim.
It’s not uncommon to find Salcete politicos sponsoring harvesting machines, fertilizers and seeds to farmers in their respective constituencies with the objective of “promoting” paddy cultivation and to keep their constituents in good humour.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who has been providing harvesters and other agricultural machines to farmers from his constituency over the last seven years, is also bracing up to play his role this year as well. “I have been making available the harvesters to farmers of my constituency since the last seven years. This year too, I will provide four harvesters to my constituents”, he said.
Nuvem Zilla Panchayat member Wilfred D’Sza is another local politico, who has been involved in sponsoring harvesters and other agricultural machines to the farmers in his village.
MLAs, including Goa Vikas Party supremo Mickky Pacheco and his Fatorda counterpart Vijai Sardesai had in the past lent their support to the farmers of their respective constituencies by way of harvesters and fertilizers.
