PORVORIM: Large tracts of paddy fields have been inundated and several wells in Kushem in Corjuem-Aldona have been polluted by saline water, when a 900-metre bundh breached at four places.
Speaking to Herald, an affected farmer, Satyavan Kerkar, informed that the Water Resources Department had constructed a 990-metre bundh near the ferry wharf to prevent saline water from entering paddy fields. “But since the bundh has breached at four places, water enters the paddy fields during high tide and spoils our crops. This year, around 30 farmers have suffered losses after saline water entered their fields. Farmers have been facing this problem since 2009,” said Kerkar. “The state government has repaired the bundh four times but the problem has persisted. The government should repair this bundh properly and on an urgent basis, else the farmers will be unable to cultivate their land and earn a livelihood,” he added.
