Sand extraction: 2 cases booked

MARGAO: Fatorda Police and Maina Curtorim Police on Sunday registered two cases against people transporting sand in their trucks without documents. These persons have been booked for theft of government property and also under the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act.

At Fatorda, based on a complaint by ASI Shyam Dessai attached to Margao Traffic Cell, the police registered a case against Ashok Hanamanth Walikar from Bijapur-Karnataka, who was driving a tipper truck that was carrying sand worth Rs 14,000.

As the driver did not have any licence for the sand extraction or transportation, he has been booked for theft of government property and also sections of the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Act for illegal sand extraction.

A similar case has been booked by Maina Curtorim Police based on a complaint by ASI Shyam Dessai, who found a sand-laden truck at Raia. However, the details in this case including the name of the accused were still awaited.
