SANGUEM: Villagers residing at Valkini Colony, Bomod and Dessai Waddo in Sanguem have bitterly complained about poor quality of drinking water supplied to the area.
“Dirt has accumulated in the storage tanks and we have made several complaints regarding the poor quality of water supply, but officials are yet to solve our problems,” stated a villager.
It is an irony that a majority of the aggrieved villagers from Valkini Colony 1, 2 and 3 were displaced by the Selaulim Irrigation Project and they had to sacrifice their land for the Selaulim Dam, which supplies water to South Goa.
When the villagers were rehabilitated, the villagers were initially provided with drinking water from a bore well in the village.
Some years back when the department undertook maintenance work of the bore well, water supply was drastically reduced from the bore well.
The department later constructed two water storage tanks at Valkini Colony 1 to ease the water supply problem faced by the villagers.
However, a villager, Devdatt Khandeparkar, complained that the two tanks have not been maintained since they were constructed.
“Dirt has accumulated at the bottom of both tanks and the lids are always kept open. This will easily allow miscreants to contaminate the water supply,” said Khandeparkar.
A visit to the tanks also revealed that cement used to construct the tanks has given way and is crumbling at many places.
