SANGUEM: Ever since the establishment of the garbage treatment plant at Kharkhatiaghati, the Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) has had no place to dispose of dead animals, and also faces issues pertaining to the segregation of waste.

Earlier, the council would bury the carcasses in the open at Kharkhatiaghati, but it is not allowed now, Deputy Chairperson of Sanguem Municipal Council Queiroz Cruz told Herald.
Cruz said that efforts by the SMC to bury the carcasses at Dudhal Kalay have also met with stiff resistance from the locals. Locals have also opposed the segregation of dry and wet waste meant for onward processing of garbage, putting the civic authorities in a tight corner here and at the Gunjimol plateau as well.
The deputy civic chief said that as the twin towns of Curchorem and Sanguem were facing extreme problems of stray cattle, a local NGO had approached the Council to allocate its land at Dudhal for the construction of a cattle pound but the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) shot down the idea of leasing this land.
Cruz told Herald that the SMC does not have a full-time pound keeper as he was promoted to the post of the driver and added that they were not in a position to employ another, as the civic body was facing a financial crisis.
“The job of the pound keeper is presently done by another council staffer who drives away stray cattle from the municipal area at night-time,” informed Cruz.
