The inept planning and construction of the Government Sports Ground at Sanguem have become a matter of concern to citizens from Sanguem as the ground is presently devoid of its use for football or cricket.
The renovation work of the ground, which was undertaken a year ago, has literally thrown the sports activities out of gear at the Government ground. Citizens complain the work done by the contractor is of poor quality with water logging in some spots as a major problem.
While the game of cricket continues to be played for some time, football activities are randomly held only for practice as the turf is not conducive for football. The problem of water logging all around the ground is reported to be a major hindrance to play football at the ground.
Earlier when the ground was commissioned some years back, it was regularly used for conducting football tournaments. However, since the ground is renovated and fresh turf is laid, not a single football tournament has been organised on this ground.
Incidentally, while the turf looks fresh, neat and green during the monsoon, the grass literally gets dried up during summer as the authorities have failed in making due provision for regular water supply to maintain the greenery.
Senior citizens and other health conscious citizens from Sanguem are also a worried lot seeing the pathetic condition of the jogging track after the renovation. The jogging track at present is filled with potholes at many places and the joggers have a hard time using the track due to its uneven condition.
The worst is the inept construction of the spectator’s pavilion. With the first step of the pavilion being constructed about a metre high from the ground, the spectators find it extremely difficult to climb the pavilion and occupy the place to watch the activities held on the ground.
Another fact worrying citizens is the frequent promise made by the authorities, including the sports director, for the construction of a swimming pool at the complex. Though due provision is reportedly made for the construction of the swimming pool at the sports complex, the citizens from Sanguem are yet to see their dream turning into reality at the Sanguem Sports Complex.
Though the ground looks amazing from outside with its lush green spread all around, the very minimal use of the ground for the conduct of the desired sports activities has become a matter of concern for the citizens from Sanguem.
