Sanguem students boycott classes on first day

Parents join their wards demanding additional teacher claiming one teacher is not enough for 80 students

SANGUEM: The students of Government Primary School Wadem Colony No. 1 in Sanguem boycotted the classes on the very first day of the school for want of proper teachers. The students were supported by their parents. The boycott was primarily to pressurise the Education Department to immediately deploy an additional teacher to the school which was functioning with only one teacher.
Sources informed that the school has enrollment of over 80 students. However, ever since the fag end of the last academic year, the school affairs are run by only one teacher as one of the sanctioned teachers has retired. Another teacher, who teaches English, attends the school for only two days in a week.
It is pertinent to note here that the parents, at the same time, led an agitation to the office of ADEI Sanguem and demanded immediate deputation of the second teacher in the school. The ADEI had assured the parents of looking into their grievances and get the issue resolved.
Moreover fearing that the scenario of single teacher running the affairs would continue during the new academic year, the parents had visited the office of Sanguem ADEI some fifteen days back and reminded him of the matter.
However, when the school re-opened today and as there was only one teacher, the parents reportedly advised their children not to enter the classes, which they obliged. No student entered the classes when the doors of the school were opened. Immediately after being informed of the students having boycotted the classes, the Sanguem ADEI visited the school and assured the parents of making arrangements for the second teacher by tomorrow (Tuesday). The parents were, however, in no mood to listen.
