MARGAO: Garbage and sanitation workers of a Municipal Council or Corporation work in filth for their entire lives. They have no family life, no health and no job satisfaction. Many don’t even cross the age of 50 and die prematurely. The family members of the group D workers of the Margao Municipal Council who have perished after serving the town have been forced to run from pillar to post for their rightful allowances and remunerations.
There are at least 12 such cases where some living retired and some deceased workers’ families still await their rightful remuneration and future security of retirement.
Lata Jamuni, the widow of a garbage worker who served for 20 years in MMC and died eight years ago, is forced to gather evidence to prove her bona fide.
The woman has been making rounds of government offices for the last eight years without success to prove that she is the widow of Parshuram Jamuni. Yet another woman who overworked for one and a half year beyond her retirement age, due to the mistake of the MMC, has been trying to get justice. She has still not got her retirement benefits and other allowances.
Gauravva Malagi, the 65-year-old woman, is forced to work at this age for a living as she has not received her retirement benefits.
“My husband has given a bond wherein he has mentioned that I, Lata Jamuni is his wedded wife and the MMC has it in its records. Still they have not released any of the benefits to me,” said Lata, who is awaiting retirement benefits of gratuity and other allowances that her late husband is entitled to.
Gauravva Malagi too waits for all her allowances which run into lakhs of rupees.
The Margao Municipal Council Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar confirmed the fact that several issues of retired, deceased workers have still remained unsolved.
Sources also informed that several files are sent to the talathi for the verification at Collectorate and are pending there.
