BICHOLIM: Public meeting at Sanquelim on Sunday unanimously resolved to oppose the ongoing work of Kalsa project undertaken by the Karnataka government.
“Preventing Karnataka from completing the work of diverting Mhadei water through Kalsa canal is the need of the hour for the people of Goa. If we fail in our attempt to stop Karnataka, it will cost too much for the present and future of our tiny Goa,” stated Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant, who is also the convenor of Movement against Kalsa bhandura.
Chandrakant Shinde said the area where the canal work is going on is ecologically sensitive area and diverting water will be a huge loss to wildlife, human population and ecology.
Sarpanchas and members and villagers from Sattari and Bicholim talukas decided to submit a memorandum to the Mhadai Water Dispute Tribunal. It was also decided to hold meetings in all the talukas and decide future course of action regarding the issue.
Keri Sarpanch Jeevba Rane, Honda Sarpanch Urmila Bhamaikar, BJP leader Vishwajeet K Rane, Rajesh Gaonkar, Ganpat Gaonkar, Prashant Desai, Amrut Singh, Kashinath Mayekar and others strongly opposed the Karnataka government for diverting and the damming work at Kalsa.
Mayem Bhuvimochan Samittee President Kashinath Mayekar, environmentalist and secretary of Mhadai Bachav Abhiyan Rajendra Kerkar and others were present on the occasion.
Meanwhile, Dr Sawant on Saturday discussed the issue of Mhadei dispute with North Goa MP Shripad Naik on Saturday and it was also decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister and President to protect the interest of Goa state.
