Margao: A coconut tree plantation drive was held at Benaulm beach where over 100 cocunts saplings along the beach front covering a distance of about one kilometer. Elsewhere at Curtorim , 200 saplings were distributed as part of a tree plantation drive informed Curtorim panch Santan Rodrigues
At Beunaulim, some saplings were also planted at the main Benaulim beach parking lot and at Vaddie beach by by Benaulim residents Rudolf Barreto, Sarpanch Remmy,Fernandes, Braulio Britto , Domnic Afonso and Konrad Rodrigues. Rudolf Barreto explained that he had been following up with the Benaulim pancahyat and Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva for allotting them about 300 Coconut and Cahsew saplings to be planted on the beach and were recently given 100 coconut saplings that had been reserved for tehm.
“We have requested the shack owners to take care of them during the season when their shacks come up,” said Rudolf while adding that Benaulim is known as the land of coconuts.
“In our younger days, our visit to the beach also took us through rows of tall coconut trees and cashews plantations. Sadly, these have almost vanished. Neither the land owners near the beach front nor the authorities have bothered to replenish those that have got washed away. Gone are the days when hordes of picnickers would park themselves under the shade of the trees,” added Rudolf.
