Panjim: The State government is all set to revive its scheme to allot the unused school premises and surrounding land parcels, to registered non-profit educational institutions and self-help groups (SHGs), to make optimal use of the assets.
The scheme, initially introduced in 2012 by the then (late) Manohar Parrikar led government, was closed since May 31, 2018. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant directed the Education Department to rework on the scheme for its reimplementation.

Sources informed that the Education department at present is having 64 land parcels, which are lying unused as the schools located there have been closed due to low enrolment and some schools are in ruinous condition beyond repair.
“In order to make optimal use of the assets, it is essential that the land or the building when asked for, by the other government departments should be handed over without demur,” sources said.
As per the earlier scheme, the unused government land and buildings were made available to registered cultural, educational, social, sports and professional institutions like bar associations, chartered accountant association, etc.
“Now, in the new scheme, the land or the premises, registered with the department would be handed over to non-profit educational institutions and SHG,” sources said.
In the past, several school premises were transferred for the functioning of Anganwadis, health centers, libraries, etc.
