Failure by the district authorities to act against illegal scrap yards has prompted Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco to warn the authorities of drastic action if things do not fall in place immediately.
In a letter to the district Collector, South, Lourenco complained that the authorities have not yet initiated action against the scrap yards. He informed the Collector that he would be forced to take recourse to such measures that may compel the concerned authorities to wake up form their slumber and act before it is too late.
He drew attention of the district collector to his letters dated April 29 and May 26 about the scrap yards that have come up in and around Manora area of village panchayat of Raia to detriment of the public, especially the farming community.
The MLA lamented that no action has been forthcoming from the concerned authorities prompting to dash off a letter to the Collector to act or to face action from his end.
Locals maintained that the Curtorim constituency has literally become a scrap yard adda given the number of illegal scrap yards across the constituency. In fact, Sao Jose de Areal village is the home for about 48 scrap yards, while many more are mushrooming at Manora and on the newly-built Arlem bypass.
