VASCO: A scrapyard situated at the Verna Industrial Estate was destroyed in a major fire on Friday evening.
Initially dry grass caught fire but it spread quickly due to strong winds and engulfed the nearby scrapyard. The fire was huge plume of smoke could be seen from a distance.
On getting the information, the Verna fire tender rushed to the site but could not enter the scrapyard due to narrow access.
Verna Station Fire Officer (SFO) Dilip Bicholkar said that fire was huge and fire tenders from Verna, Vasco and Margao were pressed into service to put out the blaze by spraying water for more than three hours.
Bicholkar said that the fire personnel faced a lot of difficulty to extinguish the fire as the scrapyard had narrow access and they could not take the fire tenders to the spot.
Bicholkar said that mostly plastic and wooden material was gutted even as the scrapyard owner was not available for comments. The scrapyard owner had also not taken any fire safety precautions, he informed.
Bicholkar said that the fire was brought under control by using a JCB to separate the burning wooden stack and then sprayed water.
