PANJIM: The State Election Commission (SEC) has directed North Goa Collector to conduct an inquiry into the complaint filed by Congress alleging violation of Model Code of Conduct by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and Deputy Chief Ministers Chandrakant Kavlekar and Manohar Ajgaonkar during the carnival float parades. The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) Secretary Amarnath Panjikar had on Monday filed a complaint demanding action against the chief minister and deputy chief ministers for flagging off Carnival float parades in Panjim on February 22 and in Margao on February 23 in violation of Model Code of Conduct, which is in force in wake of Zilla Panchayat elections.

The complaint also mentions about the speech given by Ajgaonkar at Margao float blatantly violating the Code. Sources said that the complaint has been forwarded to North Collector for inquiry and submission of the report. “Complaint is forwarded to North Collector for necessary action,” sources said. In his complaint, Panjikar had pointed out that the SEC, in a letter to the Director of Tourism on February 21, had stated that “no political functionary should inaugurate or close the function or deliver speech all throughout the event”. The Congress has also filed a complaint before the Chief Secretary against the Tourism Director and other officials of the department for not following the “Model Code of Conduct” and instructions issued by the SEC.
