PANJIM: The State government has proposed setting set up a second milk cooperative union by submitting a proposal to this effect to Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh, during a meeting held in New Delhi this week.
The decision could be a major jolt to the existing Goa Dairy, the only milk cooperative union in the State that in the recent past had been warned by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar over their frequent milk price hikes.
Speaking to media persons on Friday evening, Animal Husbandry Minister Laxmikant Parsekar who attended the meeting in Delhi said that the second milk cooperative union would be a reality in the next one and half year. “The second union is required considering that milk production in the State has almost doubled,” he said.
Parsekar claimed that the State which produced 35,000 litres milk daily two year ago now produces 82,000 litres due to various schemes implemented by the department. “By the time the second dairy is established, the production will touch one lakh litres daily. The existing union is not able to cater to this demand,” he said.
