MAPUSA: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Thursday directed the Health Department to set up an intensive care unit (ICU) at the North District Hospital at the earliest.
The directions came during his visit to the Hospital to check the status of the hospital with regards to COVID management

Accompanied by Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, Sawant said, “This visit was part of routine follow up, to check how the hospital is functioning and to understand and resolve the difficulties. Over 150 patients are admitted at North District Hospital of which around 100 patients are on low oxygen requirement”.
“The ICU has to be setup at North District Hospital. In this regard, I have already spoken to Health Department and have given instructions to set up the ICU as soon as possible. Along with ICU, we will have oxygen available 24×7. Once the ICU is set up, it will help in treating the critically-ill patients at North District Hospital. Since there is no ICU, critically-ill patients cannot be treated”, Sawant said.
The Chief Minister appealed to patients with comorbidities from Bicholim and Pernem to get themselves admitted at the step-up hospitals in Pernem and Bicholim.
“Patients with comorbidities should get themselves admitted at the step-up hospitals so that treatment can be started as soon as possible and to avoid rush at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim”, Sawant added.
