MARGAO: A joint inspection of the contaminated Old Market storm water nullah has revealed rampant discharge of sewage water from PWD’s overflowing sewage chambers.
The inspection carried out by officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Margao Urban Health Centre and Margao Municipal Council unearthed sewage water gushing out form sewerage chambers to the old market nullah at a couple of places.
The inspection team inspected the upstream and downstream course of the nullah, right from Ravindra bhavan to the Madel, where the nullah empties in the River Sal following complaint by local residents that the water channel is contaminated by sewage water.
While GSPCB Environment Engineer Digvijay Desai said the team will submit its findings to the Board for further action, Margao Urban Health Officer Dr Sanjay Dalvi and MMC Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar confirmed sewage discharge into the nullah from the sewage chambers.
In fact, Arabekar said the Margao Municipality will immediately issue notice to the PWD, sewerage to rectify the fault on a priority, while Dr Dalvi said that the chambers are ostensibly overflowing due to blockage inside.
A local resident of Madel Srikant Borkar said the entire area near the starting point of the ring road at Madel is enveloped with foul odour. “We have been knocking the doors of the PWD and other authorities for action, but in vain,” Borkar rued.
