SGPDA levy collector alleges corruption in S Goa planning body

SGPDA chairperson rubbishes allegations, counter-charges levy contractor, announces termination of his contract

MARGAO: The levy collection contractor of the SGPDA Milagres Fernandes has alleged that the has given Rs 11 lakh of the levy collected from market vendors and traders to who he says is the Personal Assistant to the SGPDA Chairman.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday  Fernandes claimed that he has given Rs 11 lakh to the PDA of which he says he got a receipt for Rs 5.5 lakh only. “I have proof that the PA of Chairman has taken money from me,” said Milagres.

Reacting to the charges, the Chairman of the SGPDA Wilfred D’Sa said that these are “rubbish allegations”.  “We will hand the termination order to him on Thursday,” said D’Sa. He also quipped, “I want to ask the levy contractor if my PA has given him the work of levy collection.”

 SGPDA chairman stated further, “Our men have checked, today there are at least 60 to 70 fishermen sitting at the market. At least 250 vehicles come to the market, 60 fish cutters who are paying money to the levy contractor. This amounts to at least Rs 7 lakh. Where is this money?” the chairman asked.
