MARGAO: It was a sign of relief to the retail fish selling traders as the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) agreed to fully open the retail fish market from June 16. However, the wholesale fish market will not operate until the curfew period is over.
On Tuesday, fish selling vendors met the SGPDA Chairman and MLA Wilfred D’Sa and requested to open the market, upon which permission was granted with conditions to strictly follow all the COVID protocols.

Felix Gonsalves, president of Retail Fish Vendors Association along with others met the MLA and urged him to open the market, as they claimed that all other fish markets in the State are open, accept the SGPDA fish market.
The MLA said that it has been brought to the notice that fish markets at other places are open for the last few days.
“Retail fish selling vendors requested to open the market, as the government has allowed others to operate their businesses. Hence, we have decided to permit them to open the market with restrictions of following the COVID safety norms,” he stated.
He said that the vendors were allowed to open the market from June 15. However, retailers have decided to operate fully from June 16.
The Nuvem MLA informed that in the morning representative of Wholesale Fish Traders had urged to open the wholesale fish market. However, their request has been rejected.
“Actually we had earlier decided to open the wholesale Fish Market too, but due to the extension of the curfew period it was decided not to allow the business at the market, as there are more possibilities of not following the safety norms with regard to COVID,” he said.
Felix thanked the SGPDA and the MLA for permitting them to open the market.
“With no business for last several days, now it is a sign of relief for us. Today we have cleaned the market and from June 16 the retail fish market will be fully opened. We have assured that all the COVID safety norms will be followed during the business hours,” he stated.
