MARGAO: Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik on Saturday underlined the need for the government to formulate an education policy which would reflect the local history, culture and landmarks such as rivers, mountains and environmental beauty in the school curriculum.
He was speaking at a function held to name the Panzorconne-Poitomado road in Cuncolim after noted educationist, Canon Antimo Gomes this morning. “Canon Antimo Gomes was a man of vision. He was a man of religion and also a man of education, who will be remembered by future generations for his immense work in the field of education,” he said.
Naik suggested that local civic and panchayat bodies should identify eminent personalities in their respective areas and honour them posthumously by naming streets after them.
Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Desai expressed his satisfaction that the aspirations of the people of the Panzorconne ward and that of entire Cuncolim could be met by him in shortest possible time. He said the resolution to name the road after Canon Antimo Gomes was moved by Panzorconne Ward councillor Crossy Fernandes. Chaplain of Panzorconne, Fr Mario Leitao, also spoke. Chairman of Canon Antimo Gomes Foundation Altinho Gomes expressed gratitude to the people of Cuncolim and Cuncolim civic body for honouring his late brother by naming the Panzorconne-Poitomado road as Canon Antimo Gomes Road.
