CUNCOLIM: The President of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Shantaram Naik has demanded inclusion of Cuncolim Revolt History in school syllabus.
Welcoming the statement made by the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar that the government would include Opinion Poll History in school syllabus, during the Opinion Poll Day function, Shantaram demanded that the Cuncolim revolt be recognised by including it in history books.
Addressing a public function in Cuncolim, Shantaram said that Cuncolkars had fought a long battle against the Portuguese way back in 1583, which is known as the first revolt against the foreign rule.
“Without Cuncolim revolt history, the history of India’s Independence and History of Goa’s liberation movement is incomplete,” Shantaram said expressing dissatisfaction that despite many memorandums and demands, government failed to recognise Cuncolim Revolt.
The Cuncolim Chieftains Memorial Trust had also reminded Parrikar of his promise made in State Assembly.
Trust President Oscar Martins said that long back when Parrikar was the chief minister, then St Andre MLA Vishnu Vagh raised the question in State Assembly and had demanded inclusion of Cuncolim Revolt in school syllabus.
“Parrikar had promised Wagh and Rajan Naik that he will set up a committee to study the Cuncolim Revolt History and accordingly he had promised that the government would recognise the Cuncolim Revolt. But unfortunately, Parrikar has deliberately forgotten the promise and nothing has been done by the BJP government,” Martins said.
“We are happy that the chief minister has promised to include Opinion Poll history in school books. We hope and pray that this promise will not be like the promise given for Cuncolim Revolt,” Martins said.
Meanwhile, Cuncolkars have started a campaign on social media to spread awareness about Cuncolim revolt. They have also decided to take to the streets if the government fails to include the Cuncolim Revolt in school syllabus.
