Shiv Sena opposes bandh call
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
PORVORIM, MAY 9
Shiv Sena has strongly opposed to Mapusa bandh call given by Mapusa Merchants Association on Wednesday.
In a letter to the chairman/secretary of Mapusa Merchants Association, Shiv Sena (Bardez) Vibhag Pramukh Philip D’Souza has advised to close down the municipal council and not the Mapusa market.
“Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) runs on money generated from the Mapusa market and if the council cannot put to good use the money collected from merchants and hawkers, the councilors should step down and allow others to run the affairs more effectively,” stated D’Souza in the letter.
“The Mapusa market has seen enough bandhs for the last two years and bandhs only have adverse effect on the earnings of sons and daughters of the soil, who bring their perishable and seasonal goods to sell in the Mapusa market,” stated D’Souza.
“Who will compensate for their losses resulting from the bandh? The main people who are interfering in the business of Mapusa merchants are the Lamanis, Tupkars and Biharis, who are selling their goods just outside their shops,” claimed D’Souza.
“The activities of these people should be closed down first and Shiv Sena is prepared to extend its assistance and support to Mapusa Merchants Association in this regard,” says the letter.
D’Souza has urged Mapusa Merchants Association to withdraw the bandh call given on May 12, as it will not only cause harassment and loss to the vendors inside the market, but will also have negative effect on the business outside the market.
“They should resort to some other methods to get their grievances redressed,” added D’Souza in the letter.
