PANJIM, NOV 23
A shooting crew which descended for a shoot at the Panjim Church Square early morning played traffic cops and shifted the barricades from the road thus diverting traffic as they wished.
Resident Rui Ferreira, who watched the early morning commotion, saw motorists being blocked from entering the Cortim road due to the shooting – a Carnival parade with King Momo and scantily clad women.
Church goers were greeted by loud Carnival music. The parish priest Fr Antimo Gomes didn’t appear happy as the shooting was taking place on the church’s historic steps without any prior permission from him.
Ferreira, whose house is in close vicinity to the steps, called the police control room at around 7.30 am for the obstruction caused to pedestrians and school-going children. However, he maintained, the PCR informed the Panjim police station, but no one turned up at the scene and the shooting went on unhindered.
The resident has complained to the North Goa Collector, Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panjim, North Goa Superintendent of Police and SP Traffic.
Some of the residents nearby were also infuriated by the lackadaisical attitude of the authorities concerned for allowing shooting in the early morning hours thus disturbing their sleep. Senior residents from the area complained of loud music and chided the authorities for allowing such nuisance in the morning hours.
In the past the church authorities had objected to the traditional float parade passing via the Church Square where King Memo proclaimed the merry-making decree after which it was stopped. Today’s carnival parade scene near the church flummoxed the parish priest who was helpless.
