PANJIM: Mumbai has a novel initiative wherein bars and pubs have started providing chauffer services to those customers who are highly intoxicated and unable to drive.
Known as ‘spare drivers’ this system has come into place in the wake of increasing road accidents due to drunken driving.
Transport director Arun Desai said that he had heard about this new initiative, but argued that Goa was far better than Mumbai and other metro cities which were high on pub culture, and in fact said that on New Year’s eve there was only one case of drunken driving reported in the State.
He added that the department has directed the excise department to ensure that all bars, especially those along highways and State roads display caution boards advising people not to drink and drive.
