PANJIM: BJP Corporator Shubam Chodankar and Edward Jorge from the Atanasio Monserrate panel were Friday declared elected unopposed as mayor and deputy mayor of Panjim, respectivey.
On Thursday, the duo was the only nominees for the post after a deal was struck between the BJP-backed council and the Atanasio Monserrate panel.
With the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) election scheduled in 2016, Chodankar will have to sort out crucial issues such as traffic congestion, pay parking, garbage management and the cleaning of St Inez creek. At a special meeting on pay parking in December, the corporators had given their approval to implement pay parking on a trial basis in two phases, once the district magistrate and superintendent of police (Traffic) had given permissions. But, its implementation is yet to see the light of day and the city continues to reel under traffic jams and haphazard parking.
