SIOLIM: Known for the world famous Anjuna and Vagator beaches, Siolim Constituency has off-late witnessed a rapid increase in construction activities and population, which have overloaded the basic infrastructure resulting in water shortage.
For years, the constituents have been complaining of irregular water supply or no water for months. They have held several protests and morchas. However, till date their demand for regular water supply has fallen flat.
The water pipeline connecting the constituency to the Tillari Project has already been laid. However, till date, the supply has not commenced. The people have accused the government departments of corruption which has led to the water shortage issue.
However, they complain that the commercial projects such as hotels, resorts and others receive water round the clock.
The constituency is plagued with another issue of low power voltage. The locals, especially those residing in commercial complexes and residential buildings, complain of facing low voltage problem.
Siolim faces another issue of bad roads which have been dug by the PWD and Water Resources Department for lying of water pipeline.
Farmers too are badly affected and are unable to cultivate their fields especially in Siolim-Marna and Sodiem. Massive agricultural land from Cuchelim to Siolim Church has been left barren for several years on account of water logged fields. The farmers have stopped cultivating their fields which remain inundated throughout the year.
The load on basic infrastructure has increased as constituency has witnessed a rise in construction activities and population in recent years.
A number of tourists have also settled down in beautiful and peaceful villages of Assagao and Siolim.
The constituents have demanded that the local authorities need to control the construction activities in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas and violation of CRZ rules.
Siolim is also faced with the issue of improper garbage management, water logging on the roads during the monsoon and unemployment.
